Maravilla, Downtown Hammond Council/President: When I became President of the DHC, it was my goal to bring Christmas back to downtown Hammond. My partner, Raymundo Garcia, and I brainstormed on how we could accomplish this goal. Since the movie A Christmas Story is based on Hammond, Indiana from author and former Hammond resident, Jean Shepherd, we thought that this was the perfect fit! Downtown Hammond has seen many changes in its history. Currently, our downtown has much to offer with more coming in the near future...the challenge is to change the negative and inaccurate perception of our downtown and to encourage people to come back to our downtown district to see what those opportunities are! Our world has changed...our downtown will never be what is was...but it can be something equally wonderful! The advent of shopping malls changed everything. We should cherish the memories of the downtown of yesterday, but we must embrace the exciting future of our downtown today! Our historic downtown is located just 25 minutes from Chicago. -Towle Theater (Year round entertainment and a beautiful venue to host private parties) -Blue Room Cafe (Featuring soups, sandwiches, coffee, and more...plus live music) -South Shore Arts Substation No. 9 (Featuring art classes and exhibits) -Paul Henry's Gallery (Featuring all forms of art) -Books, Brushes, and Bands for Education: Choir and Band programs for elementary, middle, and high school students with no residency restrictions. -Downtown Hammond Council -Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce -Plus a medley of specialty niches: -Design Studio 303, Strack & Van Til, Federal Court House, Saint Margaret Mercy, Basic Business Products, Mark Anderson Art Studio, law firms, medical services, and more! -Coming: Destination Restaurant/Catering & Entertainment Venue -and a hip and trendy Salon & Day Spa, Charter School -Visit downtown Hammond's newest shopping gem at It's Just Serendipity "A Christmas Story" Holiday Open House: Thursday, November 19 from 2-6pm Friday, November 20 from 10am-6pm Saturday, November 21 from 10am-6pm Start your holiday shopping off with yummy treats & beverages, discounts, door prizes, holiday decorations, and holiday fun!
